Investigative Research Glossary

A precise dictionary of technical, evidentiary, and architectural concepts governing VERDICT’s public accountability records.

1. Core OSINT Concepts

OSINT
Open-Source Intelligence: The discipline of collecting, analyzing, and synthesizing publicly accessible information (government gazettes, media reports, corporate filings, web archives, academic papers) into actionable research records without resorting to clandestine surveillance or illicit hacking.
Public Accountability
The systematic examination of verifiable records concerning institutions, public figures, electoral campaigns, and organizations that solicit public funds, hold public office, or influence civic life.
Chain of Custody
The immutable provenance trail linking an assertion to its originating publication, specific date, author byline, retrieval timestamp, and permanent web archive hash.

2. Evidence & Observations

Observation
A single atomic, immutable fact extracted directly from a source (e.g. "Filing #204 lists Abhijeet Dipke as Director on 16 May 2026"). Observations are not opinions; they record what a specific document states.
Claim
A plain-language assertion derived from one or more observations that can be corroborated, disputed, or refuted against independent records.
Primary Source (Tier A)
Direct, unmediated legal or institutional records: government gazettes, certified Ministry of Corporate Affairs filings, court rulings, official organizational charters, and statutory declarations.
Secondary Source (Tier B/C)
Journalistic or analytical material: investigative reporting by named outlets with editorial oversight, academic papers, and established wire services.
Corroboration
The confirmation of an observation by an independent, non-affiliated source of equal or higher reliability. Multi-source corroboration upgrades an assertion from REPORTED to DOCUMENTED.
Contradiction
Two assertions sharing entity subjects and lexical overlap that exhibit opposite negation polarity (e.g., Outlet A reports employment concluded in 2023, while Outlet B asserts active employment in 2025). The system preserves both records side-by-side with an active dispute flag.

3. Entities & Identity Resolution

Entity
A structured node in the research graph representing a Person, Organization, Corporate Body (LLP/Pvt Ltd), Domain, Docket Case, or Source.
Entity Resolution
The algorithmic process of determining whether two mentions across disparate sources represent the same real-world entity, based on name tokens, corporate DINs, geographic jurisdiction, and temporal alignment.
Identity Match State
The verification level assigned to an entity match: confirmed (score ≥ 0.78 with primary identifiers), probable (score ≥ 0.52), unresolved (insufficient signal overlap), or conflicted (contradictory attributes).
Public Interaction
A verifiable public digital act (a reply, mention, quote, or comment). Demonstrates public interaction, not a private personal relationship.
Interaction Edge
A directed graph edge connecting two entities derived strictly from observable public interactions, with recorded first-seen and last-seen dates.

4. Research Engine & Fleet

Adaptive Research Loop
A dynamic execution loop where discoveries in round N generate targeted research tasks for round N+1, stopping when expected information gain falls below a mathematical threshold or reaches the hop budget.
Research Hop
A traversal step in the investigative graph, moving from an initial target to a newly discovered connected entity (e.g. from a company to its directors).
Hop Decay
A mathematical penalty reducing the task priority of distant indirect connections to prevent research drift into irrelevant entities.
Bounded Negative Evidence
A formal research finding that a search query yielded zero records within a explicitly defined public corpus, avoiding the fallacy of declaring that absence proves non-existence.
Publication Gate
The mandatory security filter that purges internal tokens, model parameters, and raw private files before generating the public-safe web projection.
Tripartite Record
VERDICT’s signature summary structure separating findings into three distinct columns: What is Documented, What is Reported, and What Remains Unresolved.

5. Epistemic Claim States

DOCUMENTED
Directly corroborated by a primary official record, statutory filing, or direct corporate charter.
REPORTED
Credibly reported by established news organizations with on-record bylines, but uncorroborated by primary statutory filings.
ALLEGED
A person or organization has formally asserted a public claim, but underlying proof remains incomplete.
DISPUTED
Two or more credible sources materially contradict each other; both records are preserved side-by-side.
REFUTED
Direct primary evidence or authoritative judicial findings positively disprove the claim.
UNRESOLVED
A legitimate research inquiry where current public records yield no conclusive corroboration; held as an explicit evidence gap.
